I don't know about you, but I feel like winter is taking longer than usual to end this year. The cold grey days keep coming and it's time for a little break! As tempting as it is to climb under a blanket and wait out the rain, we have a better plan. Encourage healthy habits and tweak your space to make the most out of the winter light.
The days are getting longer and we have more hours of daylight to enjoy. Make the most of the light by opening curtains, screens & blinds during the day. Keep everything open from sunrise to sunset to help maintain a healthy sleep cycle. Not only will the added sunlight boost your mood, but your houseplants will also thank you!
Getting quality sleep is essential to good health, so treat yourself to new bedding and pillows this month. Invest in blackout curtains if you get a lot of ambient light from outside. Also, during the cooler months, we tend to keep homes tightly sealed with heaters blazing, which isn't always good for indoor air quality. So, add a humidifier to boost moisture and make breathing more comfortable - especially at night!
Create an inspiring workout zone inside your home. When the weather is poor outside and you can't make it to the gym, it's great to have an indoor option! It doesn't need to be a large space, just a simple corner with a yoga mat and some free weights will suffice. On days when it's not dumping, take the "gym" outdoors and enjoy some cool fresh air.
After your workout or meditation session, warm up with a steamy sauna or soak in the tub. Bathing rituals are popular worldwide for a reason! The heat & steam feels wonderful when the weather is cold and it is good for your lungs. Add a few drops of essential oils to the water for added benefits.
Finally, we are seeing some new seasonal produce in the grocery and farmers markets! Seasonal fruits & veggies include artichokes, asparagus, beets, oranges and peas. Take advantage of the lovely fresh options and stock up! Set yourself up for success by arranging your kitchen and food offerings to encourage good snacking choices. Display fresh produce on the counter, keep herbs on hand and break out the juicers & blenders!
